CSSS Race 3 Report By Race Director Aaron Likens

With two races in the record books of its inaugural season the Central States Super Series headed to the cornfields of Iowa and the Iowa International Raceway in Marshalltown, IA

The previous two events had weather issues. In Quincy there was still some lingering snow on the ground and at Carrollton in rained off and on for most of the weekend. But the weather was sunny, dry and perfect for racing at Marshalltown.

Tight competition has been the rule for this Series so far and Saturday’s qualifying sessions showed that this edition of the Series would be no exception. We thank the Finke Family and Jet Karting for welcoming the CSSS to their fine facility and for a well-run, safe, fun event.

One of the more exciting races of the weekend was the Yamaha Rookie final. Christopher Barngrover started from pole and led the field of 11 into turn one. The front four remained very close and it would remain that way all race. At the end of lap one it was Barngrover leading Jake Cole, Kyle Domark, and Gregory Gerst. No positions had changed by lap 5, but the top 4 were separated by only a half second. Lap 6 saw the first change in position as Gerst got around Domark. As the leaders continued to charge around the track they caught up with the tail end of the field. Lap 9 was an unfortunate lap for Jake Cole who misread traffic and fell to 4th. This moved Gerst into position challenge for the win. On the next to last lap the leaders caught another lapper and this time, with Gerst pressuring for the lead, Barngrover misplayed it touching the rear wheel of the slower kart making his kart go wide. This is all Gerst needed to take the lead and the win.

The Central States Super Series continues to grow in its first year and with 95 entries it appears as if the pulse of the series is beating strong. So far this year we’ve had many side-by-side finishes and an entry by a NASCAR driver. It appears that round four is going to be the biggest yet. Round four will be held at Mid-State Raceway in Springfield, Illinois August 26th-27th.  We look forward to another great day of racing and hope to see you there.
